MANHUNTER SPECIAL #1     DC COMICS

Like taking a step back into the past! While this book provides us with a cornucopia of great Kirby nostalgia, Keith Griffen, Mark Buckingham, Dan Didio, and Chris Sotomayor steal the show with their take on Adventure Comics stalwart Manhunter! Giffen’s dialog is right out of a 40’s comic and the Manhunter’s gripping about getting lame super-villians is priceless. Buckingham’s art is spot-on Kirby and Sotomayor’s colors make me wish he had been around back in the day to ink some of the originals! We also get a look at the cursed life of Jason Blood and some classic Kirby moments from the past. Going back to the days of Real Fact Comics! An excellent read! 10 OUT OF 10!

DAREDEVIL #25     MARVEL COMICS

I will admit that it has been a very long time since I have picked up a Daredevil comic. And while the novel idea of having Matt Murdock addressing the Supreme Court caught my attention, it did little to make it worth my while. The overtly (yet necessary) script was a flashback to the early years when Matt was an upcoming lawyer and was shown arguing cases but to have the Supreme Court battle be won by an impassioned plea that “Hey, super-heroes are people too.” just fell short. In other news, the Kingpin is still Daredevil’s mortal enemy and he hires various super-villians to act as his assassins. So nothing much has changed. 4 out of 10.

LAND THAT TIME FORGOT FROM EARTH’S CORE #1     AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY

American Mythology brings us back to Caspak in the next installment of the Burroughs Universe. Our time tossed travelers are all back and all in trouble. But now there are new dangers to face including giant ants and group of quasi-humanoid creature bent on taking over the land that time forgot. If you are a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs or pulp magazine stories this will be right up your alley. I give it a 8 out of 10.

GRRL SCOUTS MAGIC SOCKS #4     DARK HORSE COMICS

Jim Mahfood’s epic adventures continue in another issue. As does Jim’s art style that reminds me of Ralph Steadman’s. And there does seem to be a little resemblance between a certain host and guide and a former Gonzo journalist. Weird, obtuse, and definitely interesting. Worth a look see.  7 Out of 10.

BETTIE PAGE #2     DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Well, it official! David Avallone, Colton Worley, Craig Cermak know what they are doing. Issue #1 was not a fluk. Bettie Page is not the lovable dingbat we were lead to believe but a very smart woman with gumption! This first storyline is chalk full of goodness. Action, humor, mystery, this has it all. This book most definitely has potential! 9 out of 10.
