SIDEWAYS #8 DC COMICS
I hate to say this but I might just be too old to enjoy this title. After initially visiting the first two issues, I lost track of the title until someone pointed out to me that the Seven Soldiers were guesting. Unfortunately, it was DC’s updated version that I still don’t understand and I read all the mini series. The character of Sideways is still reminding me of the early days of young Peter Parker in a modern timeframe. But his powers are still a bit confusing and his teaming up with one of the most abstract groups in DC history is not helping. Plus the fact that he is basicly used as a way to get from point a to point b and then thrown away, is rather rude seeing as this is his title. Also annoying is Zatanna’s method of sending Sideways away. The mistress of magic, I grew up with would have known better than to use generic phrases in her spell. And so now I’m left with Sideway stuck in a universe where his powers don’t work and is run by weird versions of the Justice League. Really? At least go back to Curt Swan’s art on the Red Ant Head Superman. This Dark Nights Metal stuff just isn’t for me. I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.
JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #1 the BIRTH OF KRAKOA MARVEL COMICS
The Journey Into Mystery title returns to us to keep it’s copyright safe. Home of Thor, Lost Gods, Black Widow, and Shang-Chi, this wonderful one-shot gives us a whole bundle of Marvel history in one go! Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos are back to witness the birth of old X-men villain Krakoa! And writer Dennis Hopeless is definitely a fan of the film Matango which just adds to the fun and nostalgia! This one definitely has my attention! I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
MOON MAID #1 AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY
Again, American Mythology brings us a brief visit to the Worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs. This time our adventurers end up in Vah-Na, the home of the Moon Maid. Christopher Mills one-shot visit captures all the style of a Burrough’s story and Gabriel Rearte’s art is sexy without going overboard. A great little treat for the fantasy/sci-fi paperback fan in all of us! I give it an 8 out of 10.
THE WRONG EARTH #1 AHOY COMICS
With an amazing list of creative people, it’s no wonder this title is off to a roaring start. The first few pages look more like a Batman ’66 title than the actual ’66 title! Then thrown in some gritty Frank Miller violence and then cram the two together! The reactions of all the characters are priceless! I feel the need to spotlight the female villain henchman! But the real treat is Paul Constant and Frank Cammuso’s Stinger backup feature that literally looks like it came out of a 1940’s comic, right down to the look of the paper! This is one not to miss! I give it a 9 out 10 Grahams.
HOUSE OF WHISPERS #1 DC/VERTIGO
A new house appears in the Dreaming and what problems will it bring for Cain and Abel? Meet Uncle Monday, Mistress Erzulie, and all the gang at the House of Whispers. I have always been a fan of Cain and Abel’s residences and look forward to getting to know the ins and outs of this one. Mystery and Secrets I get but Whispers could mean a great deal of things. A fun-filled and magical ride as the new neighbors are here. A wonderful opening to a new set of characters and stories. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
HOT LUNCH SPECIAL #2 AFTERSHOCK COMICS
Eliot Rahal and Jorge Fornes prove that this title is going to last. Harsh realities, great character development, and the unlikely world of food all work together to keep this interesting. And the cliff hanger here is jaw-dropping. Food for thought (sorry I couldn’t resist.) I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
CHARLIE’S ANGELS #4 DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT
Imagine if Jaclyn Smith, Farrah Fawcett, and Kate Jackson had been given a chance at a movie before all the cast revisions. Now have that movie also introduce us to the Angels’ European counterparts played by semi-famous 70’s actresses with somewhat comical German accents. Got it? Cause that’s what I’m reading here. The only thing more fun than reading this title is figuring out which actresses are playing the German counterparts. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK #2 DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT
The good news is that Dynamite’s take on the Mistress of the Dark is staying strong. Elvira’s time travelling adventure continues to interest and amuse. Dave Acosta and the legion of cover artists keep Elvira looking like she should and David Avallone’s story picks up on everything Elvira. Still keeping the secrets of the time machine coffin under wraps, it still makes for good reading. And what Edgar Allen Poe can’t do perhaps Bram Stoker can?! A real treat for fans of Elvira. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN TEMPEST #2 IDW COMICS
Grab your notebook and magnifying glass as we venture back into the universe of Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neil where every backround image is another shout out to something or someone. Did you see the retired versions of Plastic Man & Blue Bolt. How about the Aquaman poster? This title is all over the board but it’s great fun. I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
