JUSTICE LEAGUE #22 DC COMICS
I am truly torn on this one. With very little of the Justice League or the Legion of Doom, this epic little flashback starts off by breaking one of my fundamental rules, which is don’t explain what doesn’t need to be explained. Like some kind of inescapable puzzle the Source Wall begets the Hawk creature of the Forge so we can explain the dark universes but then we need to know how those came about. So now we have this ultimate mother being that created that hawk creature but also the Monitor and the Anti-Monitor?! Sigh! Will this never end? I was perfectly happy with a Bat-Mite vs evil Mxyzptlk. One of the best parts of reading comics is those unanswerable questions that we can all argue about. If you give us answers to everything (and lame ones at that) where’s the fun? Luckily, Starman and Bat-Mite showed up or else this one would have been sitting around a four. I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.
MARY SHELLY MONSTER HUNTER #1 AFTERSHOCK COMICS
Aftershock and Adam Glass bring out another amazing story based on partial historical facts. The story of Mary Shelly and her poet friends who challenge each other to write a scary story takes a few well placed twists and turns. A lost scene (no longer ht to read. lost), a lost manuscript and a few tweaks to the classic and we are off and running. This one is a real delight! I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
SPIDER-MAN LIFE STORY #2 MARVEL COMICS
Chip Zdarsky and Mark Bagley continue their excellent work as our story picks up in the 1970’s. The leap forward in time is handled amazingly well showing all of our main players and the changes that have affected their lives. And might I add give a much more satisfying ending to the clone sage and it only lasted about 3 pages! This is a magnificent look at what could have been happening in the spider universe in real life without a What If? splattered across the cover. Of the multitude of choices in your Spider-Man reading choices, this should be at the tippy-top. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
MOON MAID CATACOMBS OF THE MOON #1 AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY
While struggling a bit with the character, this new series has plenty of potential much like it’s companion series in the American Mythology line. The art is well done and once the Moon Maid get over her dainty shyness, she’s ready to kick some tail. Another strong willed female lead, Moon Maid needs a little more in the developing stage but that’s a minor complaint and is certainly not a reason why you should be reading this title. I give it a 8 out of 10 Grahams.
DITKO’S MONSTERS #1 IDW COMICS
Steve Ditko! GORGO! KONGA! WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR! I give it an 9 out of 10 Grahams.
