A DAY LATE BUT NEVER A DOLLAR SHORT! HERE ARE A FEW OF THE BOOKS YOU SHOULD (OR SHOULD NOT) BE READING THIS WEEK. HAVE A SAFE 4TH OF JULY EVERYONE!
CHARLIE’S ANGELS VS THE BIONIC WOMAN #1 DYNAMITE PUBLISHING
The concept of this title is a definite cry out to all of us 50 something year old that grew up watching Linsey Wagner making na-na-na-na sounds when she ran or jumped and waited patiently for the intercom to say “Good Morning, Angels.”! And I find it refreshing that this go around we are going with Angels Version 4.0 with Kris Monroe and Julie Rogers joining Kelly Garrett. Unfortunately, the series suffers from two main issues. First, the use of the flirty clichés that were a mainstay of the tv show are hard to suspend disbelief here. The other is the disjointed storytelling. The flashbacks make it hard to keep the story straight. Hopefully, now that the story is started up, we can keep on a forward moving timeline. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #27 DC COMICS
It was bound to happen as the latest Big Thing crossover infiltrates the universal storyline and brings it to a halt. As Year of the Villain causes a hiccup in the midst of the multidimensional action, the Martian Manhunter and Hawkgirl finally discover the truth. But it really doesn’t matter as the rest of the Justice League are off trying to stop rise of Perpetua. I can only speak for myself when I say that this is proof that the days of the multi title crossover special event of the week are over. We are knee deep in saving the multiverse but we have to stop this epic to cut in with another epic. I used to think it was bad when the newest big thing would start immediately after the last big thing. Now the publishing companies can’t even wait for the current big thing to end before jumping into another. I give it a 5 out of 10 Grahams.
CAPTAIN AMERICA AND THE INVADERS #1 MARVEL COMICS
High marks for the re-pairing of industry greats Roy Thomas and Jerry Ordway! And on a title that their talents are battle proven. In a sort of prequel to the forming of the Invaders, Steve Rogers meets Jim Hammond as they help to protect FDR from a young Zemo. Thomas’s story flows freely and provides a fascinating plotline from the early history of Marvel. And when it comes to Golden Age heroes, no one draws them better than Jerry Ordway. With cameos by many of the original cast of the early Marvel adventures, this one calls out to us. Unfortunately for us, it’s only a one-shot. Unfortunately for Marvel, it is head and shoulders above the regular Invaders title. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
