DOOMSDAY CLOCK #11     DC COMICS

As the mini-series winds down, I’m amazed at what is missing. The hints and shadowy promises of the return of the JSA, the Legion, etc. didn’t really materialized. We got Johnny Thunder and Saturn Girl sure and some snippits but nothing concrete. Delay ridden and somewhat confussing, what this title is is a grand collection of ideas and plot points that are fascinating to think about. But with the series winding down, I can’t honestly say that it lived up to it’s potential or its promises. That being said I must admit it definately an original story and did capture my interest. I’m just glad Snyder’s Justice League book jumped in and brought the JSA back properly. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

JUSTICE LEAGUE #31     DC COMICS

The return of Hypertime and the Justice Society (along with Kamandi) are definately the highlight here. Serious overtones here and yet having Gorilla Grodd and Cheetah flying WWII bombers on their way to Pearl Harbor seems like something out of the old SuperFriends cartoon. One of my pet peeves in comics is when the villains seem unstopable. Sure storylines have to get bigger and better but even I would be thinking about calling it quits by now. Wait, did Batman just crack a joke? Now I know it’s the end. All we can do now is wait for the inevitable and wait for the newest big bang to reset the DC Universe. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.

BATTLEPUG #1     IMAGE COMICS

Mike Norton’s webcomic takes full form with Image Comics and makes it rewarding. The new storyline here makes for enjoyable romp through the sword and sorcery genre. Kinmundian is a wonderful character whose slice first ask questions later provides a tone of humor through the story. But honestly the highlight of the book is his giant Pug. He’s just so adorable! From his first appearance in the book to his flinging the villain off into the distance, you just want to smoosh his big goofy face. And yes Mike Nortan I did get the symbolism of Coufefe. Nice. It’s also great that Image is releasing the backstory in a compugdium edition! Definately worth checking out. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

BATMAN  FACSIMILE EDITION #181     DC COMICS

Facsimile or not, this is definately worth picking up. Classic Robert Kanigher script with pencils by Sheldon Moldoff (as Bob Kane)and inks by Joe Giella, this special highlights just how good the good ole days were! This one issue has so much history packed into it it boggles the mind. Aside from all those wonderful ads that are faithfully reproduced here, we get the 1st appearance of Poison Ivy as well as three little used female villainesses Dragon Fly, Silken Spider, and Tiger Moth but you also get a two page Batman & Robin mini-poster by Carmine Infantino and Murphy Anderson who also do the cover. Check out what a Batman Comic should be like. My main question is why doesn’t DC use that red cover color anymore?  I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
