DOCTOR TOMORROW VALIANT COMICS
Being a fan of the original series, I was excited to see the reboot of the character. Many of the key elements are still here as the story bounces back and forth in time. But the focus has been shifted to a younger version of the good Docotr going back in time to team up with his younger self. This will appeal to the younger readers as they can identify but it appears to have left some of the dark and more meaningful parts of the original series behind. So while this is entertaining, I miss the Cold War – No Future attitude of the first series. What would you do if your older self showed up at your door with a super suit? I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
METAL MEN #5 DC COMICS
While still up there, the storyline slips back a bit as the epic team-up of the Metal Men and Omac falters and leaves the future of this current version of Omac in question. Along with the revelation that Ilda is a cosplayer came as quite the let down. And while Lead and Tin’s adventure comes to a rather abrupt end, the chaos back at Doc Magnus’s lab continues. Iron and Mercury have been converted by the Nth Metal but still there are no clues as to whether or not this is a good thing. This issue kind of stalls out. I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.
MAD MAGAZINE #12 DC COMICS
The reprints begin but I find great joy here. This is the Mad Magazine that I read as a younger man. And while there still is some new material, most is devoted to previous classic bits. So while I am falling out of my chair laughing at Arnie Kogen and Jack Davis’s send up of the MASH TV series, I wonder if any of the younger readers will have any clue to what this show was or if they care. Sigh, now I feel old. But I’m still enjoying this one. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
