STARGIRL SPRING BREAK SPECIAL #1 DC COMICS
If this was the only book I reviewed this week, I could die happy. This book actually brought tears to my eyes! Geoff Johns’s story is both touching and awe inspiring. He has managed to take little bits of history from various points in the DC Universe and weave them into pure magic. His reimaging of Leading Comics lead players is really inventive especially his handling the continuity bloop of a Golden Age Green Arrow. We also get the bearded older Shining Knight from Stargirl’s first series and the legacy hero version of the Crimson Avenger from the pages of the JSA title from the late 1990’s! I was also overjoyed to see the return of third string villain The Clock King, now rendered as a more potential threat. The backstory on these heroes as related to Stargirl are tragic and full of potential, really making these characters more accessable to current audiences. And seeing as the main part of the plot revolves around the short backup story in the pages of DC Comics Presents #38 from July of 1981 brought tears to my eyes as I cried back then too. With bonus pinups from both Jerry Ordway and Fred Hembeck, I’m going to need to take my blood pressure medication! With Todd Nauck back doing his usual great job on art and the coloring talents of Hi-Fi, this is a joy for the eyes as well as the heart! With tons of hints to future plot lines and the return of old favorites, this has something for all comic readers! It is unfortunate that the Graham Crackers rating scale only goes up to 10, cause this … this is an 11!
BATMAN/SUPERMAN #18 DC COMICS
Gene Luen Yang’d story continues to just stun me by it’s elegance and style. What can I say the man can navigate a multi reality plot! And with Iven Reis & Jose Luis working the pencil side of it and Danny Miki & Jonus Tridade working the inks, this book is stunning. And to top it all off have Sabine Rich color it (this woman know what burning film stock is supposed to look like!) this one hits it out of the park! A new version of Two-Face (and you’ll never guess who or why)! A meeting of the Golden Age Robin and Jimmy Olsen! Holy 1950’s World’s Finest Comics, Batman! If you haven’y been following this storyline you really need to! I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams.
MILESTONE RETURNS #0 DC COMICS/MILESTONE
In 1993, DC Comics launched their collaboration with Milestone and created a new universe of comics. Even back then, I was annoyed by DC annoying habit of starting new sub-companies (DC-Vertigo, DC-Milestone, DC-Helix, DC-Piranha). And unfortunately, this book features the same identity crisis the run had back then. However, this annoyance could be over looked because the Milestore characters were interesting, became more developed over a short amount of time and presented a different look at the world. And luckily, the return of the Milestone titles is doing that all over again. Mildly updated by what these previews show, they are still interesting and different. This preview has accomplished what it set out to do. Looking forward to seeing where these lead. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
