“Bonfires burning bright
Pumpkin faces In the night
I remember Halloween”
– Glenn Danzig
It’s that time of year again boys and ghouls. Spooky season is upon us. Gather ‘round the bonfire, roast some marshmallows and queue up a John Carpenter movie soundtrack (I recommend The Fog).
Here are some recommendations you may have missed over the past few years.
Feral – Do you like Cats? I love cats. Cats are great. Ever wonder what would happen if they were to get out of the house and a rabies outbreak occurs with the local wildlife? From the creative team behind Stray Dogs, picture a Zombie apocalypse style story from the point of view of your local domestic feline friends. Volume 1 collects the first 6 issues plus a cover gallery with awesome homages to some classic horror films. Picture Night of the Living Dead. With Cats.
Universal Monsters from Image – Get ready for not just Halloween, but also the upcoming Universal Epic Universe (seriously the timing on these couldn’t be any better) which will feature their “Dark Universe”/Universal Monsters area. The comics published recently by Image Comics have been fantastic to say the least. Dracula released last year as well as Creature from the Black Lagoon earlier this year. Frankenstein has One issue left before it is collected. If you are a fan of the classic movies, these are right up your alley. Dracula and Creature from the Black Lagoon Returns are currently available in Hardcover at all of our locations.
Houses Of The Unholy – Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips did a Horror Story. If you enjoy their usual output (easily one of the best creative teams currently releasing books), you do not want to miss this. Currently available at all locations on our Top 50 Graphic Novel displays.
Junji Ito *Insert title here* – From Alley to Gyo, and Lovesick to Venus In The Blind Spot, we have you covered. If you like Japanese styled “Body Horror” and you haven’t read Junji Ito’s works, you are missing out. For fans of movies like The Thing, The Fly, Human Centipede, and Shiver.
Creepshow – Currently on its 3rd volume, Creepshow is a wonderful throwback to good old fashioned Anthology style publishing. If you love the original movies and the recent TV series on Shudder, or are just a fan of classics like Tales From The Crypt and you missed this, you may want to check the series out. Volume’s 1 and 2 available in Trade Paperback with a Holiday Special due out this December.
Hopefully you check out some of these recommendations for this Halloween season. Just remember to stay safe, get plenty of candy, and if you happen to see Silver Shamrock having a give-a-way, please remember….
