JSA #1 DC COMICS
Well, DC is going to try again. And while Jeff Lemire and Diego Olortegui are trying their best, (and remember when it comes to the Justice Society of America, I have some very high standards that need to be met) we have some definite issues here. After a brief overview of the team with passing references to the All-Star Squadron, we fall into a jumble of past plot points and story ideas that aren’t exactly meshing right now. Kobra’s back and I was never a big fan of that storyline from the 1999 JSA series. The JSA line-up is mainly Infinity Inc.+. And whatever the hell happened in the pages of that last big crossover nightmare has really flip-flopped some characters. Obsidian is going dark side again even after all we suffered through to get him on his meds. Jade has become a horrible pep rally coach and apparently had a moment with Sandy Hawkins? Dude! Didn’t you learn anything back in the 1990’s when you had a moment with Hawkgirl? Hourman and Jesse Quick and Hourman are on the verge of a divorce? And the new Wildcat is waaayyyy to over the top. Meanwhile, the elder statesmen are trapped in the Tower of Fate. Think I’ve seen that episode as well. Last time Mordru was involved if I’m not mistaken. And while I’m glad to see that some of the villains from the Wesley Dodds, Sandman, and Jay Garrick the Flash mini-series are getting some use, I just don’t see them as world ruling members of the new Injustice Society. Maybe once we get some clarity about the Tower of Fate thing and the real JSA get back, things might get back on track. Time will tell, it always does. I guess I should just be thankful that this series isn’t so Batman Family focused like the last series. 7 out of 10 Grahams with the hope things will get better.
GREEN ARROW 2024 ANNUAL #1 DC COMICS
For decades now, the similarities between Green Arrow and Batman have been apparent. And so as the Bat Family grows, so must the Arrow Family. But Joshua Williamson’s story isn’t about family ever though it seems like it. This is really a celebration of the long career of Oliver Queen. From his friends and family to his super hot chili, this story acts as a reminder why the battling bowman has survived the changing times. That’s because no matter what costume he’s in, Oliver Queen is exactly the type of person we all need as a friend. An honest, trustworthy person that will tell us what we need to hear even if we don’t want to hear it. And this wonderfully illustrated volume of GA’s classic hits by Sean Izaakse and Amancay Nahuelpanmis truly stunning both with the beard and without. 10 out 10 Grahams.
STARRING SONYA DEVEREAUX COMBAT NURSE HOSPITAL UNDER SIEGE #1
Doesn’t matter which cover you go with, homage (Holy 1970’s Marvel Night Nurse cover!) or the standard, American Mythology Productions are bringing you another VHS classic from the B-Movie Scream Queen Sonya Devereaux collection. And this time, we’ve got Die Hard in a hospital! Nick Capetanakis, Brian and Brendon Fraim do their usual awesome job of turning the plot of a B-movie into a heck of a comic book! And with some additional color assistance from Matt Webb, this one proves to be another gem in Sonya’s filmography! And the icing on the cake is the wrap around that gets us into the movie. In the past, we’ve seen a viewing at a slumber party, a personal appearance but this time we have Sonja sneaking into her own movie as part of a movie premiere blogger video. And if there is one thing Sonya knows its self publicizing! It’s alway the highlight of a visit to Doc’s Corner to be able to gather up a copy and it also appears that we might be getting a new film soon with the poster ad for Alien Queen’s Revenge! You guys keep putting them out and I’ll be there to review them like some sort of twister Roger Ebert! 10 out of 10 Grahams!
