PRETTY VIOLENT #1 IMAGE COMICS
Holy Cr*p! I think I have a new favorite 2019 book! Who would have thought that Image Comics would have this little bizarre title on the stands. And just for the record, the subtitle “with lots of swears” doesn’t do it justice. Derek Hunter & Jason Young’s story of a cute little super-heroine who just wants to help quickly goes off the deep end! And Hunter’s art style just adds to the goofy cartoon nature of this series. But the best part of the story is that you actually feel bad for poor Gamma Rae as all her good work quickly goes to H*ll! And her feelings towards the hero hecklers is priceless. This is a true gem but don’t let the cartoony art fool you. Unless you kids were brought up by your deranged uncle the longshoreman, this could teach your children a whole new vocabulary! I give it a 10 out of 10 Grahams!
THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT 1975 #1 AMERICAN MYTHOLOGY
Any book that brings me immediately back to my youth is worth it’s weight in gold. With the talents of such classic names as Marv Wolfman, Nick Cardy, and Sonny Trinidad, this loving reproduction adapts the 1975 movie featuring Doug McClure and Anthony Ainley (Yes! the 5th Doctor’s Master!) which many of us remember fondly. Originally set in a magazine format, the black and white art doesn’t suffer much from the size change to regular comic. This is definately an example of the fine comics we were enjoying back in “the good ole days” ! I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
HISTORY OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE #2 MARVEL COMICS
At some point in this series artist Javier Rodriguez must call Mark Waid and tell him he’s insane! The amount of images Waid’s look back at the Marvel Universe needs is overwhelming. Even to the reader. This is definately a book that requires multiple readings and in small quantities. After 3-4 pages, these images can cause migraines! But nevertheless, they are beautiful. And what’s more this look at the time frame of World War 1 & 2 reminds us of the amazing heroes that Marvel was creating back then. Some of the characters who show up made even me think for a moment. Freedom’s Five, Confederates of the Curious, Mystery Men, The Twelve, Department Zero, First Line, Monster Hunters, Avengers Initiative! The list goes on and on. Definately my favorite parts of the Marvel timeline! I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
