FUTURE STATE SHAZAM! #1 DC COMICS
While the general premise is sound and rather interesting, Tim Sheridan’s script is overflowing with questions and plot points. Enough to give me a headache. And while Eduardo Pansica manages to keep up with the narrative’s images, it’s a lot to take in. Neron is back and uncharacteristicly generous, a version of the Teen Titans have opened an Academy to train the next generation and the first class has graduated into one of the Justice League groups. As usual, the Question seems to be the only one putting the pieces together. No spoilers but what’s with the Creeper, Jakeem Thunder, and Bil…I mean Captain Marvel? The surprise cliffhanger is telegraphed from page 4 (actually page 1 but you won’t see it until after you read a few pages). Trying to cram this story into 2 issues makes for a loss of suspense and the ability for the reader to figure it out in their own time. I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.
BATMAN CATWOMAN #1 DC COMICS
Tom King provides us with another interesting look at the Batman family featuring some unique elements. An elderly Joker and Catwoman swapping stories in furniture with horiible patterns! Phantasm returns to hunt down the goons of the Joker! The Joker surrenders?! Flashbacks, flash forwards, this one is keeping the mysteries rolling and the suspense building. Plus it’s nice to indulge Clay Mann in a bit of gothic “The Old Dark House” vibe. And did I mention his take on elderly people’s furniture? While falling under the Black Label logo, this tale would have found a place in Detective Comics for sure! I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
