THE MARVELS #1     MARVEL COMICS

Just a quick note to Marvel Comics, Comic shops hate the word “The” as the first word of a title. That being said how can you not love a book with an Alex Ross cover, written by Kurt Busiek, amazing art by Yildray Cinar, colored by Richard Isanove, and lettered by Simon Bowland. And while you’re trying to figure out how main character Kevin Schumer got all his wonderful toys and where have I see that Star-Gun before (don’t tell me, it will come to me.), bounce back and forth through time as we start to get clues as to the overall mystery. And there is no better way to start the tale than with the All-Winners Squad! (You know, the Invaders!) And who remember Lady Lotus when she was appearing in the 1970’s Invaders title? (I do, I do!) And with Alex Ross’s vision of The Golden Age Vision on the cover, I was sucked right in! I give this one a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

CULT OF DRACULA #2      SOURCE POINT PRESS
Well, we’re back! Can Rich Davis and Henry Martinez keep the ball rolling after a great start in issue #1? The answer is yes they can. While we have some very familiar character’s names, they have definite concept diffences. Mina, Lucy, Renfield, Van Helsing all have different purposes here in the story but there are real similarities with the original novel. And the timing is perfect with each issue stringing you along, giving you just enough to make you think and then leaving you waiting for the next issue. And when a title keeps me on the hook for issue three, you know they must be doing something right. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

DETECTIVE COMICS #1035     DC COMICS

During the late 60’s and early 70’s, the folks at DC realized that Robin was growing up and that a new breed of creative teams wanted to take Batman down a more serious path. And so Robin went off to his own adventures in college, Bruce Wayne and Alfred locked up the Batcave and Wayne Manor and moved to a penthouse apartment in Gotham. More gothic stories began appearing as Bruce travelled the world. Dozens of new characters were introduced and the world of Batman became real. I get that feeling again as I read through this issue. Bruce Wayne is taking more of a center stage and Batman is showing off his detective skills. And it’s a good fit. I give this an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
