BATMAN/SUPERMAN WORLD’S FINEST #2     DC COMICS

I guess we need to thank DC Comics for leaving this title the h, e, double hockey sticks alone. No continuity, no cross promoting epic storylines, just good clean old school fun! And thankfully, Mark Waid proves time and time again that he not only understands the characters but know how to write some stellar dialog. Superman’s comments to Robin, the interactions between Robin and Supergirl, all are real and tickle the funnybone. The best part of this title is the fact that anything can happen. Doom Patrol – there! Cameos by Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern – there! Good old fashion Superman style breaking the time barrier – there! A certain young boy named Billy – there! You never know what’s going to happen next and that is a big part of the nostalgic feel of the book. And Dan Mora’s art highlighted with Tamra Bonvillain’s color pallet give it that late 1960’s/early 1970’d look that I truly appreciate. This one gets a 9 out of 10 Grahams.

TRIAL OF THE AMAZONS WONDER GIRL #2     DC COMICS

The penultimate chapter of the 7 part Trial of the Amazons. And it’s good to see that DC Comics ability to expand the Wonder Woman universe doesn’t interfere with the fact that they haven’t know what to do with these characters since Diana gave up her Mod clothes and returned to the red, white, and blue bathing suit in the early 1970’s. With multiple groups of Amazons, multiple Wonder Girls, the mystery of Hippolyta’s murder is solved in classic Scooby Doo fashion with Wonder Girl Cassie acting as Velma. No spoilers not because I don’t want to ruin it for you but because I honestly didn’t care. While being a key piece in the Wonder Woman universe from the start, Diana’s mother hasn’t been the same in awhile. And the Amazons concept itself has been stretched to the limit and lost many of the originality that it had in the beginning. Did I mention that the palace collapses and is replaced by Doom’s Door? Unless that door opens in part 7 to reveal Victor Von Doom in a multi company crossover, I ain’t gonna be impressed. I give this one a 5 out of 10 Grahams only because I was amused by the “The murderer is in this room as we speak!” run down of Cassie’s clue hunting.
