G.I. JOE SATURDAY MORNING ADVENTURES #3 IDW COMICS
While I was not a child of the 80’s, I did watch the classic cartoons of the day with my younger brother. So I am well versed in these cartoon adventures. And I am amazed at Dan Schoening’s art that looks like it just stepped off the production cells from Marvel! But moreover, Erik Burnham’s story is just as goofy as many of those classic episodes. Cobra Commander finds a genie in a lamp? A classic double cross! Smart aleck comebacks and Cobra Commander whining! I can actually hear the cartoon voice actors as I read this. And still neither groups can hit anything with a gun! All the best the 1980’s had to offer on the printed page. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
SPECTREMAN HEROES #1 ANTARCTIC PRESS
A comic hosted by FujiTV’s Spectreman?! Count me in even if it is only a six part series. This issue focuses on Electroid Zaborger who blends the human/robot relationship of Johnny Sokko and his Giant Robot with the motorcycle action of Kamin Rider. If you haven’t figured it out yet, this one is a great big shout out to the import television from the 1970’s and they are doing a magnificent job of it. There can be no doubt that master of all talents Hiroshi Kanatani knows his subject matter. And with a great wedged in American scene on page one for a little backround, this is as good as a Toho film. Definately nostalgic, these characters nevertheless have a place in today’s world of comics. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
PLANET COMICS #5 ANTARCTIC PRESS
Issue 5 (Legacy #78) continues the fine tradition of science fiction tales that started in 1940. And if you can tear your eyes away from the jaw dropping cover art by Burcham, You have three well done tales of space and the unknown for you. Plus maybe a pin-up inside! And while this is all good stuff, I wonder if the creative teams in play here have thought about doing some reoccurring characters? Just something to think about. If jet packs, lazer guns, and concepts of an unforgiving universe are your cup of tea, look no further. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
