MIDNIGHT SUNS #1 MARVEL COMICS
Having grown up on Gary Friedrich and Mike Ploog’s Monster of Frankenstein, Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog’s Werewolf By Night, and of course all the talented names associated with Marvel’s Tomb of Dracula series, everytime Marvel reintroduces a new horror series, I hope to get to relive those glory days Sadly, these revamps usually flop and unfortunately this one is not off to a good start. This comic is definately geared to the Strange Academy audience. Ethan Sacks story reads like an issue of he title with special guests popping up like guest instructor, Blade. And unlike the original 1990’s version (which spelled the name properly “Suns” – geez!) the characters here are all ready to work together from the get go with the exception of one. But like over-saturized nature of the 1990’s, we get Wolverine as our rebel member. And while I am not the biggest fan of this line up, I am more annoyed by the blatently implied time frame that the heroes are up against. But I think my biggest annoyance is the character design of Zoe Laveau, the living zombie girl. Did no one read Marvel’s black & white Tales of the Zombie magazine?! That’s what a living zombie should look like. Fans of Strange Academy rejoice. Fans of Marvel horror be sad. 5 out of 10 Grahams.
SGT. WEREWOLF #1 BLACK CARAVAN
Following in the footsteps of DC Comic’s Creature Commandoes and IDW’s War of the Undead, Rich Woodall’s creative story pulls out all the stops! Try to follow along as 5 World War II soldiers are dropped behing enemy lines to stop a group of Nazi’s who have teamed up with a vampire to create an army of super-Golem soldiers only to find that their sarge has become a werewolf! If you understood all that, you should be reading this book! And while some of these plot points are the basis of several stories and movies over the years, they never fail to entertain. An origin story for sure, the promise of further adventures of the machine gun using werewolf and his trusted sidekick (not a werewolf) brings a smile to my face. This one deserves an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
GODZILLA VS SABAN’S MIGHTY MORPIN POWER RANGERS IDW COMICS
And so the final issue is upon us. And much like an episode of the television show, everything gets wrapped up in a nice little package. As always, Rita and her minions escape to an unknown fate. Zordon’s big blue face waxes poeticly about how the day is saved. Tommy’s Green Ranger is back in the fold and of course the Mega Dragonzord is formed! Hooo … flipping … ray. Meanwhile, Godzilla seems confused as the reader as to what the heck these last 5 issues have been about. This was a bit of a needless cross-over that, while it had a few moments, did very little. I would have preferred to see IDW commit their resources to getting a new Godzilla title on the newsstands. I give it a 6 out of 10 Grahams.
