SANTOS SISTERS #3 AMERICAN NATURE PUBLISHING
There is nothing I like more than seeing a quirky independant comic series keep popping up. And so I loved that Santos Sisters’ “iconic third issue” hit the stands. And that it has not lost any of that weird vibe that brought it to my attention two issues ago. Flirty and filled with little easter egg references from everyday life, it remains an interesting entry in the world of comics. A little more risque than an Archie Comic and yet still reflecting that style, Santos Sisters has a crazy cast of characters that you can’t help but love. And with the introduction of Kreg the Handsome Barbarian and the return of Boozy and Buzina Bee, you can’t lose. I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams.
DC POWER A CELEBRATION #1 DC COMICS
The main reason that I scooped this up is the story featuring everyone’s favorite All-Star Squadron member, Amazing Man. With similar powers to Marvel’s Absorbing Man, Will Everett’s personality made him a stand out in those issue of Roy Thomas’s masterpiece title. And here is no different as Evan Narcisse’s story evolves the character magnificently. The war is now over and Will is still facing the same prejudices just having a different interpretation. Sprinkle in a little true life history, and this one reminds us what the world was like back then. It also shows us that sometimes a flashy costume isn’t the best way to fight injustice. Shaving his head and growing some facial hair to distance himself from his WWII identity, Will is still fighting the good fight but now from the shadows. And Darryl Banks does an amazing job of capturing the art styles from the All-Star Squadron title in the flashbacks. With 9 other stories featuring such heroes as Black Lightning, Nubia, and Vixen, this one does a great job or representing Black History Month. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
CAPTAIN AMERICA SENTINEL OF LIBERTY #9 MARVEL COMICS
I will be honest, it has been a long time since I paid any attention to the good Captain so I was entering this one without a clue. But how could I resist a cover blurb about the New Invaders. And with Cap and the Destroyer on the cover, I couldn’t. The only problem is that these really aren’t MY Invaders. Nick Fury, Sharon Carter, and two unfamiliar characters are not my idea of the Invaders. While this grouping is full blown Team Cap, they are not the Invaders. And thus, it lost it’s appeal. However, there is plenty of action and fight scenes. Some flashback dialog that enforce the long term friendships in Team Cap help a bit but not enough. And truthfully, I was never a big fan of M.O.D.O.C. I don’t care if he’s showing up in the new Ant Man movie. And while I could not help but giggle at the giant headed, stubby arms version that plagued Iron Man back in the good old days, this new version is just atrocious. So I’m calling false advertising on this one and giving it a 5 out of 10 Grahams.
