A truly unique take on Mighty Mouse! Sporting an outstanding cover by Alex Ross, the story of art prodigy and social outcast Joey, was easily identifiable and sort of uncomfortable to see. Igor Lima bounces between art styles from cartoony flashbacks to real life playground chaos, to the sketches in Joey’s art pad without blinking. And yet again Dynamite Comics ventures out into a new series and comes up with a winner. 9 out of 10 Grahams.
I am always wary of One-shots and Specials that coincide with a movie opening. And although I really can’t get over the Steve Trevor sporting a 1970’s GI Joe beard, Tim Seely has out done himself with this story. Focusing on Trevor’s purpose in the DC Universe, it is a heartwarming and gut-wrenching tale. A definite winner. 10 out of 10 Grahams.
One of the most interesting things about a book like this is that fact that it’s coming so far out of left field that you don’t know what to expect. So when this oddball showed up on the newsstands, it was worth checking out. Gwar the band has been around since 1984 and I should know because I interviewed the band back then when they appeared at the Villa Park Odeum for a Halloween convention. The core themes of the band and it’s characters are pretty much represented but that’s to be expected as it’s written and drawn by various members of the band. The great news is that if you can tolerate a lack of political correctness, this is a very good read. The basic Sci-Fi premise fits in well in the comic format and the art is very well done. A shout out to Dynamite for actually getting this on the stands. 8 out of 10 Grahams.
