DOCTOR WHO DOOM’S DAY #2 TITAN COMICS
Doom’s Day is an entertaining story that seems to have been published a bit too late. Jody Houser’s tale of a smart aleck deadly assassin searching for the Doctor and finding the Master’s Missy incarnation instead. And to make matters more interesting, this is during the time that Missy was trying to convince the Doctor she’d reformed and starting pretending to be him. Houser was obviously paying close attention two regenerations ago. Unfortunately, this story has shown up in a time frame where the Peter Capaldi’s Doctor has been replaced in relevence but not long enough to join the ranks of the classic Doctors. And seeing as this is mainly a Missy story, it loses some (not all) but some relevance. A tale out of place in time. I give it a 7 out of 10 Grahams.
FEARLESS DAWN COLD #1 ASYLUM PRESS
Steve Mannion is back with another one-shot of everybody’s favorite army boot wearing, nazi fighting, Alamo survivor?! With the exception that this volume is printed sideways (you know like a comic strip) … (in the newspapers?) … (oh just Google search it!), this one-shot highlights Mannion’s quirky look at the life of his greatest creation. And the idea of a stand off between the tank riding villains and Dawn when they discover all their bullets are duds is priceless. With Dawn slumping down on the floor and muttering the immortal line, “Now what are we gonna do?” still has me snickering as I type this. Super metaphysical but totally fun. Don’t miss out! 9 out of 10 Grahams.
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #5 DC COMICS
Finally, we get a new issue of the flagship title of DC’s New Golden Age imprint! And a fitting end to the initial threat of Per Degaton. Everything tied up in a nice little snowglobe. And with the timelines resetting themselves, there are certain anomolies. And just when you thought the biggest issue was what was going to happen to the Huntress now that she undid her own time line, we finally see some cross over with the Stargirl and the Lost Children mini-series. And while DC’s release timing sucks, hopefully they can get back on track. With two new titles coming soon with Alan Scott, Wesley Dodds, and a whole bunch of guest stars in the immediate future, we may have a new ground work to build on. Here’s hoping. But the best part of Geoff Johns’ tale is Batman and his reactions to the Huntress! I give it 8 out of 10 Grahams.
