What’s That Light in the Darkness?
As Summer approaches, it makes me think of one of my favorite summer time activities: camping out and looking at the stars, far from the city lights where you’d be lucky to see the stars. Makes me think of the glow in the dark stars and comets I used to put up on the walls and ceiling of my childhood home. Which brings me to the topic of this article, one of my favorite gimmicks: glow in the dark covers! You would think there would be a ton of glow in the dark covers, but there really isn’t a whole lot. Just makes those ones that did come out all the more memorable. So here is my list of the top 5 glow in the dark covers in my collection:
5) Blair Witch Project #1
Now I know what you are thinking: “I didn’t even know there was a Blair Witch Project comic, let alone a glow in the dark cover.” This 1999 one-shot had this special Dynamic Forces glow in the dark edition, which though minimalist in style, manages to stand out due to its glow in the dark feature of the creepy wood doll things that the Blair Witch hung in the wood. Just the thing to freak you out in the middle of the night when you see a glow in the dark version floating in your room!
4) Feral #2
This one is the newest on this list by far, as it only came out in the last few weeks. Feral has been an excellent sequel to Stray Dogs so far, and issue #2 had this very neat glow in the dark version of the regular cover. How cool is this!?!
3) Superman #123
The intro to the new Superman, featuring insane electric powers and turned blue! This storyline proved fairly unpopular (you just can’t mess with a classic), but this cover was sick! How better to introduce such a crazy suit, than with a super gimmick like glow in the dark.
2) Ghost Rider #15
The absolute best character that just demands a glow in the dark cover, this is in my mind one of the essential Ghost Rider covers, and obvious top choice for best glow in the dark covers all time! Turn off the lights and marvel at that giant glowing, flaming skull! Fun for hours! (or at least a few moments)
1) Venom The Enemy Within #1
One of my absolute favorite covers of all time! I remember being a kid, loving Venom (naturally) and seeing this on the shelf at the grocery store and just losing it! How cool is this! Kind of a cartoony Venom drawing is amped up by that glow in the dark tongue and saliva that let you know; you were in for a treat with this mini-series. One of the harder glows in the dark covers to find, it is a must for all gimmick cover fans and Venom collectors alike!
So there you have it, a treasure trove of glowy goodness to put on the shelf and enjoy as you try to fall asleep!
