MYSTIK U #1 DC COMICS
While vaguely reminding me of a popular book/movie series, Alisa Kwitney’s story has a lot
going for it. Most of the main characters are long established in the DC Universe going back to pre-New 52 and that includes the instructors so older readers keep your eyes peeled. Enough new characters are thrown in for good measure. And the plot point that one of the students will become evil and basically destroy the world as we know it, works well in this context. I am especially appreciative that one of the new characters is named PLOP! after the DC Comics series of the 1970’s. My only problem with the book is that it is aimed at a more youthful audience. The first day of college shenanagans is appropriate but not as entertaining to us over 50 crowd. However, this minor gripe doesn’t hurt the enjoyment of this book. I give it an 8 out 0f 10 Grahams.
CHARLTON ARROW #2 CHARLTON/AC COMICS
Welcome Back to the comics we had when I was young! The pairing of Charlton and AC Comics continues to bear delightful fruit with the continuing adventures of fan favorites E-Man and newcomer Mr. Mixit! With other characters like Sarge Hook and Lavender Lynx appearing, this title really packs a punch for the price. And lead by names like Cuti, Staton, McKenzie, Kupperberg, Skeates, and more! Definitely an enjoyable set of stories for old and new readers alike! 10 out of 10 Grahams.
QUARRY’S WAR #1 TITAN COMICS
Max Allen Collins! That’s all I should have to say for this review. Whether in comic form or in novels, Max Allen Collins is a true genius when it comes to suspense and crime. Quarry’s War just adds to his long list of success. Bouncing between 1972 and 1969, Quarry ‘s adventures are well told and appropriately drew by Szymon Kudranski. Fans of Crime Noir rejoice as this new title gives us exactly what we want! 9 out of 10 Grahams.
BATMAN ANNUAL #2 DC COMICS
Wow. That’s what I have to say about this annual. Simply, wow. Tom King has really out done himself with this march through timeline featuring the Bat and the Cat. No spoilers here but obviously influenced by some of the ideas introduced with the original Earth-2 Batman, the story here is tragic and funny at the same time. Much like real life. Don’t be ashamed to cry by the end. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
NEW TALENT SHOWCASE 2017 DC COMICS
Concept-wise, this book deserves high praise and DC’s Diane Nelson has earned full points. These short little snippets created by 2016 Talent Development Workshops shows us that the comic community is in good hands. However, I would like to see DC throwdown more challenging assignments. More diverse characters such as Doctor Fate and Poison Ivy are added here but this is a talent vehicle. While these new artists and writers are looking to get that sweet gig on Batman or Wonder Woman, I’d love to see what they could do with more obscure characters or even different 3 level characters. What about an episode of Perry White, Superman’s Boss done in the vein of the 60-70s Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsens? Just something to think about for next year. Until then, keep an eye out for the names listed here, I predict good things from them in the future. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
