THE MUSKETEERS #1 ZENESCOPE
A bit of a confusing hodgepodge, mixing the ins and outs of Zenescope’s Nexus Universe with Alexandre Dumas’s famous characters being trained and released into the real world by Merlin and Morgan LeFey from King Arthur legend. With super powers and cheeky attitudes, these new characters have the odds completely stacked against them. The problem lies in the fact that with no foreknowledge of these characters, Issue 1 doesn’t make any of them likable. In finding out numerous elements that are going to mess with them, I don’t seem to have a reason to cheer them on. I give it a 6 out 0f 10 Grahams.
BRAVE AND THE BOLD #1 DC COMICS
Finally, DC’s classic team-up book returns to us and Liam Sharp’s story is a wonderful look backstage in the DC Universe. With a cross between Fables and those original Wonder Woman issues with Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, this tale of murder in a far off realm seems to be bursting with potential. Wonder Woman’s time with Steve Trevor are both intimate and funny. Batman showing the difference between fear and terror is well portrayed by the art. And while only a mini-series, hopefully this will inspire a new series. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
SUPER SUCKERS #1 SITCOMICS
True to its ad hype, this truly is TV that you read. And truth is, it actually is quite enjoyable. A mash-up between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Archie, the college high jinx of two vampire sorority girls and their friends are not new but still are refreshing. And with chapter interruptions reading like an old-school Mad magazine commercial and a reader rating system based on what time you go to bed, this book smacks of originality. I give it a 9 out of 10.
MATA HARI #1 BERGER BOOKS
Another independent mini-series that is flying under the radar. Based on the life and times of one of the most controversial women in history, this fascinating story is a whirlwind of flashbacks and courtroom scenes that work well together. Emma Beeby has turned in a well rounded tale with Ariela Kristantina’s art being both classicly illustrated and yet full of life. This is a terrific read if you search it out. I give it a 9 out of 10 Grahams.
TAARNA #1 HEAVY METAL COMICS
One of the most iconic heroines is back and legendary scribe Alex De Campi is spot on with this new storyline! With the Escorza’s doing their very best in channeling the good ole days of Heavy Metal magazine, this book has a lot to offer. Granted we’ve got some nudity so it’s not for everyone, this still is worth every penny. And why shouldn’t it. Be sure to check out the who’s who under the publisher. Not sure which has the most famous names, the creative team or the people on the publishing end. I give it an 8 out of 10 Grahams.
Hey but that’s not all …
